Teachers: Marsden Wagner, M.D., Valerie El Halta, Marion Toepke-McLean, CNM, and Jan Tritten Content: Global view of midwifery presented with slides by Marsden. Discussion of how autonomy is gradually being taken back by women. Marion presents a historical and statistical picture of safe motherhood (i.e. prevention of maternal death). Global poverty and malnutrition are the primary reasons for maternal deaths. Initiatives introduced for safe motherhood are clearly presented. Valerie expresses anger that all responsibility for sexual care is still with women. She speaks of modesty being important to Middle Eastern women, so American hospitals are an impossible birth site for them. She shares interesting experiences in Malawi. Very inspiring! Explores how low self-esteem of women contributes to difficulties in the birthing process.
