Sage Femme

Margaret Charles Smith caught her first baby when she was five years old. She went on to become one of the last great “Granny” midwives before midwives were outlawed in Alabama in 1976. Miss Margaret tells the story of this amazing woman. You’ll see how her apprenticeship lasted for a year without pay, and that later, in her homebirth practice, she was often paid in produce, fruit or eggs instead of the $5.00 fee for her services. She attended over 3500 homebirths and never lost a mother. There were times when she caught four babies in a night or waded in water over her knees to reach a birthing mother. Ina May Gaskin calls her a “national treasure,” and all of us can learn from her courage, perseverance and motherwit.

The DVD also includes a short section about how the Granny system was crushed in Alabama.
