Stars of the Sky and Dancing Waters

by TR Tulley and KC Clark

[2004, 2005. Orem, Utah: Balanced Families, 32 pages, paperback.]

[Review first published in Midwifery Today Issue 77, Spring 2006, © 2006, Midwifery Today, Inc. Review by Cheryl K. Smith.]

These two books were written by TR Trulley, a midwife, and colorfully illustrated in watercolor by KC Clark. Stars of the Sky is a story of a mother describing to her twins their homebirth, and is a sweet way to introduce children to normal birth. Dancing Waters tells the story of a family who choose a doula and waterbirth in a hospital setting. I really liked the subtle inclusion of people of color and with disabilities in the books. These books should be in every library; together they provide a gentle introduction to different settings for normal birth, in a way that will interest children.

Reviewer Cheryl K. Smith is managing editor for Midwifery Today magazine, editor and publisher of Ruminations, the Nigerian Dwarf and Mini Dairy Goat Magazine and raises a herd of miniature dairy goats in the coast range of Oregon.
