Birth As We Know It

by Elena Tonetti-Vladimirova

[2006, Birth into Being, 1 hour and 15 minutes + 2 hours of bonus features, DVD.]

[Review first published in Midwifery Today Issue 81, Spring 2007, © 2007, Midwifery Today, Inc. Review by Cheryl K. Smith.]

This stunningly beautiful film by one of the co-founders of the “Conscious Birth” movement in Russia features 11 natural births—in the water (waterbirth), at home, breech and the birth of twins. Some of the most amazing scenes are of women birthing in the Black sea. This film will make an excellent addition to the libraries of birth professionals throughout the world and is a “must see” for mothers- and fathers-to-be. In addition to showing the positive effects of conscious and natural birth on parents and baby, the film contains footage on sexuality, circumcision and limbic imprinting. Seeing babies welcomed into the world in a gentle and joyous way is truly inspiring!

Reviewer Cheryl K. Smith is managing editor for Midwifery Today and publisher of Ruminations, the Nigerian Dwarf and Mini Dairy Goat Magazine, as well as raising a small herd of mini dairy goats in the coast range of Oregon.
