Heloisa Lessa is an obstetrical nurse. She teaches a post-graduate course at the University of Rio De Janeiro and works with homebirth. She also works with the Lauretê Indian community in the rain forest of Amazonia, with traditional parteras who live in Acre, Amazonia, and with several organizations that work to humanize birth in Brazil.

Making Birth Humane in Brazil

Brazil is a huge country with different modalities of childbirth assistance in each region. We have 18,000 obstetricians, 6,000 obstetrical nurses and 60,000 traditional midwives. The midwives work in the rural areas of the northern part of Brazil and the obstetricians are concentrated in the urban areas.
