Mylo was beautifully born at home on a snowy January evening, just one day shy of 42 weeks gestation. He was a perfect 8 lb, 20-inch baby with no signs of being “postdate.” His birth is a testimony to practicing patience, really trusting birth, and the willingness to “go the distance.”

Royal Birth for Platon

Russia is a long way from my cottage door. I love Russia. Her strength and wild forests. Her legends and legendary wimyn. A motherland she is called, and rightly so. Mother to so much. I remember my first journey there in 2011.

Promoting Human Rights in Childbirth as a Solution to Obstetric Violence

In 2007 a chain of coincidences brought about a meeting with a gynecologist, who asked me if I would like to help in the labor and birth ward at one of the public hospitals of Honduras.

Marion’s Message: The Role of the Midwife

The last decade of the WHO Sustainable Development Goals (2015–2030) has been dedicated to nurses and midwives. Cadee and Wicklund stated that, “two million midwives and 22 million nurses make up half of the world’s health workforce and are at the heart of health care everywhere” (Cadee and Wicklund 2020.).

Midwives’ Roles

I remember when I first started midwifery in 1976—after my second child and first homebirth—I realized that being a midwife included so much more than prenatal care, birth, and postpartum care. We were counselors, nutritionists, life coaches (for a year, sometimes more). We were also childbirth educators and doulas (although that was not a word we knew back then). The Role of Doulas

Throughout history, women have been supported during pregnancy and birth by laywomen, i.e., mothers, grandmothers, aunts, sisters, and friends. It wasn’t until birth moved from home to hospital that women were forced to birth alone, surrounded by technology and medical staff rather than loving companions.

Body Secrets Revealed

After more than 40 years as a massage therapist, I am still awed by the secrets and hidden truths within the human body. According to the ancient principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the body tells us everything and it’s up to us to read these clues and use this information for healing purposes.
